Marron defends the firm’s record in its core businesses. It’s also completing an $80 million computer project to meet potential millennium bug challenges by the end of this year. This element seems to have been replaced in modern gaming era by the element of graphic representation. the article really made me think about the element of good writing in RPG games and its role in the presentation of the game`s fictious world and its characters. Especially since when I first played it, I didn`t finished it owing to my inexperience and a formatted diskītw. Reading the review I was possessed by a certain strange nostalgia which I think will soon result in me obtaining a copy of the game again and give it one more try. A lot of it probably owing to the fact that it was also one of the first RPGs I encountered. I think RtK is a good game for RPG beginners, BaK is a highlight for experts and BiA is not worth playing anymore.īetrayal at Krondor was definitely one of the best RPGs I ever played. In an interview with PCPlayer he called the game "not an RPG, but a fantasy experience", hence the mini games and the nearly JRPG like structure of the game. Feist wanted to do something more original than Betrayal at Krondor. It is more than ironic that Feist landed back at Sierra with Return to Krondor (which originally would've been called "Tear of the Gods" as was the later released novel) after 7th level went bancrupt. Having no Feist name on the box and the uneven art style (comic look character portraits) was a killer, too. The fact that the game was an early Windows product and quite bug ridden didn't help either. The game is bloated by unnecessary combat and is heavily railroaded - in an open world environment, no less. (read the introduction to the BoA manual)īetrayal at Antara was a competent piece of work by people who on the one hand tried to imitate Feist's genius and on the other hand had no clue what makes an RPG work. The following fallout between Sierra and Feist found the planned sequels dead in its tracks and it is only because of one Sierra employee's stubborness that Betrayal at Antara was produced - and the fact that the engine did cost so much. I remember the german Powerplay magazine rewarding the game an 85% score but heavily criticizing the slow engine. The license and the production did cost a fortune and the sales were a bit lesser than expected due to very high system requirements of the fiightsim 3D engine. I think you have to consider several point if you want to compare those 3 games in a fair manner.īetrayal at Krondor was an experiment at the absolute peak of Sierra/Dynamix success in the business. The alchemy system wasn't too bad but I seem to recall that there were a lot of heavy pieces to lug around. Plus the combat system was done well, not as well as in the original but still pretty good and I definatly liked playing one of Fiest's main characters Jimmy the Hand. There was magic but the equipment had a different feel than the normal RPG. The thing I liked about these games is that there were no "Longsword +1" or huge amounts of magic weapons in the world. A lot more linear than the first but it was fun. I think they were trying to recreate Pug in Fiest's books but fell far short of that goal. I ended up playing a few more days and even though I did like some of the features in the game like how you leveled and the bead chests, but I just couldn't finish it or even get halfway. I later found out about all the bad blood between Sierra and Fiest and why he pulled his name and world from the sequel. Sierra pulled a fast one by naming the game almost exactly the same as the first. After a couple of hours of playing I figured out that this game had nothing to do with Fiest at all. I figured, at the time, that this was a part of Fiest's world he hadn't wrote about yet. I couldn't recognize any of the characters, races or locations from any of Fiest's books. Which sequel are you talking about Betrayal at Antara or Return to Krondor? When I bought Betrayal at Antara and started to play I was totally confused. The Outer Worlds is available now for the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.Gaming has come a long way in recent years, with millions of people worldwide now enjoying all sorts of different games. As fans await news regarding its gameplay and story, The Outer Worlds 2's new star system remains a mystery waiting with new enemies, companions, and capitalism to satirize. Though it is uncertain whether the feature of voiced protagonists will be included, it's likely that the title will bring a plethora of new experiences to help cement the game as a standout. Ultimately, The Outer Worlds 2 looks to be an exciting new adventure for fans of Obsidian Entertainment, with many hoping that the game will push the boundaries of the original. Voiced protagonists on a smaller scale may be viable given how The Outer Worlds was quite a short game in comparison to other RPGs, and its sequel might follow the same approach, paving the way for such an inclusion. While the silent versus voiced protagonist has been a divisive point among RPG fans, both have the potential to be used successfully in the genre. Games like Cyberpunk 2077 showed that voiced player characters could be used without detracting from the freedom of a customizable protagonist. Similarly, being able to hear the protagonist's banter between companions could make the group and the respect they have (or don't have) for the captain feel more realistic, putting emphasis on The Outer Worlds' moral choices along the way. Rather than just reading words and seeing the characters react, having to hear the words out loud could make players think twice before opting for a villainous route. Having an option like this in the game's sequel could make voiced responses more tangible, with indifferent or dissuading dialogue feeling more heartbreaking to choose. Given this was a pivotal character moment where Parvati disclosed her asexuality, the player had the option to sympathize or even empathize with the character's struggles, or to brush off the character as she poured her feelings out. For example, dialogue with The Outer Worlds' Parvati as she confided in the player over her feelings for Junlei was made more impactful through the ways in which the player could react. Such interactions could be heightened through voiced responses from the player, which may help to amplify the different tonal choices presented. RELATED: Leaving Behind Halcyon in The Outer Worlds 2 Will Be Bittersweet A Voiced Protagonist in The Outer Worlds 2 Could Help to Accentuate Its Different Tones Much of the player's dialogue choices in response to his depressing corporate lingo helped to create a good back-and-forth between the two, which could pave the way for similar interactions in the sequel. One example of this was through Martin Callahan of Spacer's Choice, otherwise known as the Moon Man, whose deadpan delivery intermixed with corporate slogans was the highlight of the Groundbreaker's offerings. The game excelled in its satirical approaches, with much of its humor relying on voice direction. The Outer Worldswas incredibly successful in its use of tonal shifts, seen not just in its major choices, but in its myriad character interactions. While the first game was successful in its silent approach for the player character, the use of a voiced protagonist in The Outer Worlds 2 could help to accentuate these choices, furthering the impact of the game's dialogue. Through moral quandaries and dialogue choices imbued with different tones and personality, the protagonist of The Outer Worlds could become an extension of players themselves. Like other RPGs, it allowed for the freedom to tailor its experience. The Outer Worlds was a game as colorful as its characters, rife with interesting terrain to explore, quests to complete, and decisions to make. The Helios is an easy to use blaster, with one caveat. The blaster comes with a single, seven-round magazine. Note also the spring return on the priming handle, an improvement over the Apollo’s stiff priming hook.Ī single Rival rail sits on top of the blaster, to use with various accessories. The safety switch sits on both sides, allowing for ambidextrous use.Īlso allowing ambidextrous use is the priming handle, which is a separate piece that can be inserted (and removed) on either side of the blaster, simply by pulling back a button on the priming sled. A priming indicator also sits at the rear, showing the orange plunger when the blaster is ready to fire. The back of the blaster is thick and curved, allowing use as a shoulder stock. It has a large handle, due to it also serving as the magazine well. The Helios shares the same solid, no-nonsense blaster body design as other Rival blasters. Note that this blaster came from Canada, where it is already on Walmart store shelves. It demands a bit of patience in operation, but otherwise is a reliable, smaller spring-powered primary. The Helios is, as you’d expect, a respectable update to the original Apollo design. Now that the new colors are coming to store shelves (and appearing at Toy Fair), I’m going to fix that. Somehow, despite buying one and taking pictures, I never actually got around to writing a review. The full image gallery for Helios XVIII-700 may be viewed at Helios XVIII-700/Gallery.The Helios has been on shelves for a while now, as a Phantom Corps addition to the Rival line.
The protein-chemical toolbox ensures improved understanding Project partners also comprise researchers from the iNANO Centre, Aarhus University, who study protein stability. Specific focus is given to a new enzyme with a high activity, which will break down lactose faster than the enzymes used so far. Project efforts further include the use of new enzymes as well as improved purification of the enzymes added. coagulation of proteins which may cause sedimentation, just as they will learn more about interacting conditions in order to achieve a complete picture of quality changes and the reasons for these. Subsequently, the researchers will characterize the product changes that take place, such as e.g. 6 months, which is considerably shorter than the shelf-life of ordinary UHT milk which is approximately 1 year.” The shelf life of lactose-free milk is approx. Next, the samples are stored at different temperatures, 25 and 35 degrees respectively, for a period of up to 1 year in order to take into account the fact that UHT milk is often not refrigerated contrary to fresh milk as we know it from the refrigerated counter. Lotte Juul Knudsen, PhD student in the project, explains: “In the project, we add the enzymes either prior to or after heating in order to test at which point it seems most appropriate to add them. This new PhD project will explore the changes in physical properties and chemical composition of lactose-free UHT milk, which relate to shelf life and freshness, after storage of these products at various conditions.” Unrefrigerated milk Dekker, Biochemist and Senior Researcher in the DSM Biotechnology Center in Delft, the Netherlands, explains about this cooperation: “Working with world-class academic partners such as the Department of Food Sciences of the University Aarhus, as well as cooperating in public-private partnerships is extremely important to DSM, as it is an important route to build and share knowledge to develop new technologies. Within the framework of Aarhus University’s interdisciplinary iFOOD Center, DSM has co-founded a PhD position.ĭr. The researchers cooperate with DSM, an international enzyme company located in the Netherlands, which supplies enzymes for feed and foods, and which is a world-leader within lactase enzymes. Within the framework of the project, the researchers will investigate shelf life, quality changes and underlying mechanisms in lactose-free UHT milk produced at a dairy by adding different lactase enzymes in a realistic production process. The undesirable breakdown process may result in disadvantages as to sensory perception and shelf life, and means among other things, that UHT milk, with added lactase, has a shorter shelf life than UHT milk without added lactase. With time, these processes may interact and result in changed appearance and quality changes due changes in aroma components and the protein backbones. the brown color appearing when we roast meat or fry an egg. This is a well-known reaction also witnessed in other foods, e.g. This process is known as the Maillard reaction and may cause a slight browning of the milk. In addition, the glucose and galactose resulting from the lactase treatment may react with the milk proteins during heating. These can cause changes in the milk protein part as these additional, unwanted enzyme activities may “break” some of the protein structures. The Maillard reaction – a complex challengeįor the industrial applications, the lactase enzyme is concentrated from a fermentation process, and depending on this isolation procedure may contain additional undesirable microbial enzyme activities. Therefore, the enzyme is added to UHT milk in order to split the lactose allowing people that suffer from lactose intolerance to drink milk. In other parts of the world such as major parts of Asia, the gene, that keeps the enzyme active, is “turned off” in a major part of the population resulting in lactose intolerance. In the Western part of the world, in particular the part where milk drinking is common, this enzyme remains present and active in our digestive system, more specifically the small intestine. The lactase enzyme helps infants break down the natural lactose in breast milk into glucose and galactose, which may be absorbed by the intestine contrary to lactose. Researchers from Aarhus University are currently studying how so-called lactase enzymes – enzymes added to lactose-free UHT milk, in order for people suffering from lactose intolerance to be able to drink it – affect the milk, and if these can be improved. However, especially long-life lactose-free milk is exposed to challenges in relation to shelf-life, stability and quality, including taste and appearance, when stored unrefrigerated for a longer period, which is the case in many parts of the world. Long-life milk (ultra-high-temperature (UHT) processed milk) is a growing global market. He began using heroin to ease his stress and some health issues.īefore the release of Nevermind, Cobain had reconnected with Courtney Love, who was fronting the band Hole. As someone who built his artistry on anti-establishment sentiments, Cobain began feeling he was losing control of his future. With Nirvana's popularity skyrocketing into the mainstream, Cobain was conflicted on the direction his music was going. 1 on the music charts and establishing Cobain as an exception songwriting talent of his era. Nirvana's single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" became their biggest hit, pushing their album to no. In 1991, Nirvana signed with a major label, Geffen Records, and released their second studio album, Nevermind, which henceforth, gave them their "grunge" label. Nirvana also got the opportunity to tour with Sonic Youth that year and after various changes, brought in former Scream band member Dave Grohl to replace Channing on drums. Cobain met rocker Courtney Love at a Portland nightclub in 1990, but their romantic relationship would develop later. What was evident, however, was Cobain's songwriting skills and what would become their hallmark blend of heavy metal and punk.Īs the band forged on, 1990 became a fateful year for Cobain and the rest of Nirvana. In 1989, Nirvana released their first album, Bleach, which failed to make a big impression. Around the same time, Burckhard was replaced by Chad Channing on drums and the band was making headway in Seattle's music scene. His band agreed on the name Nirvana and released their first track "Love Buzz" on a small label. Starting in 1988, Cobain's musical ambitions began moving forward. Despite financial restraints, the couple lived a relatively happy life in Olympia. He also was fighting with his troubled mother and didn't get along with his stepfather.Ĭobain spent much of 19 living a nomadic life, staying with friends or sleeping in public buildings to avoid his family problems. Throughout high school, Cobain would get deeper into the drinking and drug scene. It was Osbourne who exposed Cobain to more punk bands, but his newfound interest didn't take Cobain away from self-destructive habits. He discovered the Melvins, a local punk rock group, and became friends with one of its members, Buzz Osbourne. When Cobain was introduced to punk rock music, a seed was planted that would forever change his life. It was during his high school days back home that Cobain was able to demonstrate his artistic talents through his love for drawing. In the early 1980s, Cobain went to live with his mother and her boyfriend who were back in Aberdeen. At age nine, Cobain went to live with his father who eventually remarried, which put more strain on their relationship. 1971), the two were separated when their parents got divorced. As a child, Cobain was artistic and had an ear for music. Kurt Donald Cobain was born on February 20, 1967, in the small logging town of Aberdeen, Washington. On April 5, 1994, in the guest house behind his Seattle home, Cobain committed suicide. After releasing the highly successful album Nevermind, Nirvana's highly acclaimed album In Utero was released in 1993 and catapulted to the top of the music charts. Cobain also began using heroin around this time. Kurt Cobain started the grunge band Nirvana in 1988 and made the leap to a major label in 1991, signing with Geffen Records. |
